Process Paper

After a while of enjoying the fabulous film, Titanic, I figured that there must be more to it than just a wonderful film. I wanted to do more research about Titanic, the ship of dreams, and once I heard the topic of History Day this year, Conflict and Compromise, I concluded that my topic could fit. Many conflicts surround the sinking of Titanic including lives lost, a design flaws. cost cutting, and a dangerous speed race. As a requirement of the 7th grade world history curriculum, it has been a pleasure studying Titanic as part of History Day.

For research, I visited the local library, where I found several books that were extremely helpful. The internet was also a much needed help. For a while, I had a hard time finding primary sources, but soon, I found many quotations from surviving passengers and newspaper articles from the period. As far as putting my entry together goes, I used Microsoft Frontpage, which was simple and fun to use. For each web page, I put each together as if it was one paragraph, covering as much information as possible. For images, I found primary source pictures that seemed to suite what I needed to include, and I inserted them into my web page. I finally linked all of my pages together with hyperlinks and my project was nearly complete.

The topic of Titanic teaches people that conflicts such as those involved with Titanic can lead to disasters, however, important lessons and laws can be made to ensure that these disasters never happen again. For example laws have been made requiring lifeboat drills to insure that passengers prepared, and shipping routes have been changed to avoid icebergs. In addition, the number of lifeboats on a ship has to meet the number of passengers, and if not, more. Furthermore, the topic of Titanic portrays the conflict between the social classes that caused a terrible loss of life for the poorer classes and helps people realize that no one person or group should be treated differently because of the amount of money he/she or they has. This has been an extremely valuable learning experience for me because I discovered what it would have been like on Titanic, whether I was in the first of third class, and the issues that surround its sinking, and how tragedy's can sometimes lead to a better future, making people more aware of what could happen and how to prevent it.
